A man was seriously injured in an accident that involved a pickup truck and a passenger vehicle. The man was identified as Francisco Latta. The incident took place in Bethel Township, Branch County, Michigan. It occurred in the morning on Wednesday, April 15 and was reported to the authorities around 9 a.m. according to the accident reports.
According to the details shared by the family of Latta, he tried to apply brakes and stop at a stop sign on the Cranston Road. However, the brakes malfunctioned. A pickup truck was traveling eastbound on the Parham Road at the time. As Latta failed to stop, the pickup truck tried to avoid hitting Latta’s car. The truck still ended up broadsiding Latta’s vehicle.
Due to impact of the collision, Latta’s car left the roadway and collided with a tree. The collision heavily damaged the driver-side of the vehicle, causing Latta to sustain multiple injuries, including head and face cuts as well as broken bones. He was rushed to the ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital for treatment.
The pickup truck involved in the truck incident was pulling an anhydrous ammonia tank. Anhydrous ammonia is considered a hazardous material. During collision with Latta’s car, the tank pulled by the truck overturned. However, the safety valves on the tank remained shut and the tank didn’t leak in the wake of the crash. To handle the possibility of a leak, Bronson firefighters remained on standby on the scene of the crash.
A number of local and state agencies responded to the incident as per accident reports. These include Michigan State Police as well as the Branch County Sheriff’s Department.
