Jason Clark of Crystal Falls Dies in Snowmobile Accident

A 42-year-old man from Crystal Falls died from the severe injuries sustained in a snowmobile accident. The accident took place on the Trail 113 in Crystal Falls on Tuesday.

According to the details shared by the Iron County’s Sheriff Office, Jason Clark was riding a snowmobile just south of the Superior Avenue when the vehicle struck a tree. Clark was headed northbound on the trail at the time. He failed to properly negotiate a curve on the trail and lost control of the snowmobile, colliding head-on into a tree. The sheer impact of the collision threw Clark from the snowmobile causing severe injuries. He died at the scene of the crash.

The tragic accident took place at 9:17 p.m. on Tuesday. Following the crash, law enforcement officials were notified and reached the site of the accident briefly.

Investigations are still ongoing into the actual cause of the crash. The deputies from the Sheriff’s Office are being assisted by Iron County Central Dispatch and the Michigan State Police Accident Investigators. Other agencies assisting in the investigations include Iron County Search and Rescue, Nash Funeral Home and the Aspirus EMS. It remains to be seen whether overspeeding, road conditions or other factors played a role in causing the crash.

It is hard to determine a negligent party in a crash like this which involves a single vehicle and a road-side object, like a tree. However, negligence may still be proved if a poorly maintained trail or faulty snowmobile equipment caused the crash. In such cases, entities such as equipment manufacturer or the local authorities responsible for maintaining the trail may be held accountable.
