– A man accused of stealing an ambulance from a Flint hospital and leading authorities on a chase before crashing into a tree has been sentenced to jail time.
Raymond E. Kibby, 33, of Burton, was sentenced this week in Genesee Circuit Court to six months behind bars with credit for time served. He pleaded guilty in December to assault with a dangerous weapon, eluding and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
He previously faced additional charges of stealing an ambulance and destruction of police or fire property, but those charges were dismissed as a result of a plea deal.
Authorities said Kibby in late November stole an ambulance that was parked at a Flint hospital where he had been seeking treatment for opioid withdrawals. The ambulance recently had been used and operators had left the keys in the ignition.
Police pursued the stolen ambulance, which ran through multiple red traffic signals. Kibby eventually crashed the vehicle into a tree near Alvord Avenue and Fenton Road.
The crash did not cause any serious injuries, according to investigators.
Kibby reportedly told authorities that he stole the ambulance because he wanted to go purchase heroin. He will be taken to a substance abuse rehabilitation program at the completion of his sentence, according to local media reports.
