A woman who now faces charges for causing the death of an 82-year-old pedestrian in Detroit, Michigan, would require the expertise of a car accident lawyer to plead her case. Prosecutors on Wednesday, April 22, charged the female motorist who lost control of her vehicle and killed the elderly man with second-degree murder.
The fatal incident played out on Monday, April 14, on Evergreen Road and Pilgrim Street. Authorities said officers were dispatched to the scene following reports of a deadly crash involving an elderly citizen.
Responding officers discovered the victim, Arthur Brewer, 82, dead on the scene. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect, identified as Shemeeka Lashawn Walthall, 26, of Detroit, was traveling in her car alongside a juvenile passenger, behind a DDT bus.
The motorist attempted to bypass the Department of Transportation bus at a high rate of speed, causing her to cross the double yellow lines. After the maneuver, she overcorrected back into the northbound lane but lost control of her vehicle in the process.
As a result, the vehicle drifted off the roadway and hit a tree before spiraling onto the pavement and crashing into Brewer’s parked car. The victim, who was at the time unloading groceries from the struck car, was thrown off as a result.
The motorist fled the scene of the wreck but later turned herself in to the police.
The culprit now faces charges of second-degree murder, reckless driving causing death, and fleeing deadly accident scene when at fault.
Walthall’s charges were filed on Saturday, April 18, prosecutors confirmed. She was arraigned on the same day before the 34th District Court and granted a $50,000 bail term.
In Walthall’s situation, it is advisable to consult a car accident lawyer for adequate representation.
