Tractor Operator Killed in Gaines Farm Accident Identified as Allen Whitcomb

Allen Whitcomb

The man who was killed earlier this week in a tractor accident while working on a farm in the Gaines Township region of Michigan has been identified by the police. In updated accident reports released on Tuesday, April 28, the fatal victim’s name was disclosed as Allen Whitcomb, a 73-year-old resident of Byron Center.

Officers responded to the tragic incident, which took place in a field located near 87th Street SE and Breton Avenue, just before 9 pm on Monday, April 27, following reports of a tractor moving out of control with no driver in sight.

When the Kent County sheriff’s deputies arrived, they found the out-of-control vehicle before locating its driver a few miles away. Whitcomb was sprawled on the ground, unconscious with severe injuries when they found him.

During the rescue operation, Dutton firefighters were administering life-saving measures on the victim when the truck dislodged from an implement it was hauling and was set in motion once again.

The tractor kept moving until it crashed into a Dutton Fire Department vehicle, a Ford F-550. The truck then forced the unoccupied Ford into an embankment where it finally came to rest.

Investigating officers believe the fatal victim to have been hit by the out-of-control tractor during the escapade. Allen Whitcomb was pronounced dead at the scene. No other casualty was recorded in the encounter, as confirmed in the accident reports.

Police are still investigating what brought about the fatal occurrence.
