Van Buren County Single-Car Crash Claims Ronald Gilliland’s Life

A man whose car struck a tree on Sunday afternoon, May 24th, in Van Buren County, Michigan, passed away from the injuries sustained. In the accident report, the authorities identified the deceased as Ronald Edward Gilliland, 58.

The investigation conducted by the Covert Township Police officers uncovered that the man was traveling in the 4100-block of M-140, south of the Covert/South Haven KOA campground. It is less than five miles from the Lake Michigan shoreline.

The officers believe that Gilliland was traveling south when his 2005 Chrysler Town and Country for unknown reasons crossed the centerline. He veered off the road on the northbound side and collided with a tree. Witnesses told the first responders who arrived at about 3 p.m. that they heard a loud noise and went out to investigate.

They found the man unresponsive and tried to perform first aid to save his life. Sadly, they were unable to revive Gilliland, and the officers pronounced him dead. The police said that there was no other person in the vehicle, and no other car was involved.

The investigators are unsure if drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident, and they are waiting for the toxicology report to rule out the involvement of either of the two or both. There is no additional information.

Accident reports show that single-car crashes occur for different reasons, ranging from the drivers’ negligence to adverse road conditions. Drivers are advised to cultivate safe road habits for their safety and that of other road users.
