Police said a Michigan man fatally stabbed his wife after she crashed her vehicle Monday evening in Saginaw Township.

Lenard K. James, 49, of Saginaw, faces charges of murder and carrying a dangerous weapon in Saginaw County District Court, according to car accident reports from the Saginaw Police Department. Authorities said he killed his wife, Vernida L. Hicks, 51, also of Saginaw, after she crashed their vehicle on State Street on Monday evening.

According to car accident reports, Hicks was eastbound on State Street at about 5 p.m. Monday when she and James began arguing. She allegedly lost control of the vehicle in the 6200 block of State Street and crashed into a telephone pole.

Both Hicks and James were able to exit the vehicle. However, the argument continued, and James stabbed Hicks several times before fleeing the scene, police said.

James was arrested shortly thereafter. He was charged with open murder, which, per Michigan law, includes the potential for conviction of first-degree or second-degree murder.

It’s unclear from car accident reports available Thursday whether anyone was injured in the wreck. Police also have not said whether the argument or some other factor, such as speed or intoxication, might have caused Hicks to lose control of the vehicle and crash.

James remains held without bond at the Saginaw County Jail, authorities said. Additional court proceedings will be scheduled, according to prosecutors.
