Wrongful Death Lawsuit for Accident Victim Lake Jacobson Revised to $50 Million

A wrongful death lawsuit filed against two police officers and a tow truck company has been revised from its original amount of $30 million to $50 million. The lawsuit is filed in lieu of the death of Lake Jacobson in a fatal DUI crash that took place back in 2017 on the Pittsfield Township road.

The accident took place when Jacobson’s vehicle was hit in a head-on collision by Desten Houge of Ypsilanti. Houge was driving under the influence at the time. Both Jacobson and Houge were severely injured in the accident. Houge died at the spot while Jacobson succumbed to her injuries a few days later.

In a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Jacobson’s husband, it is alleged that two Pittsfield Township officers failed to neutralize Houge when they had a chance. The two officers apparently came in contact with Houge only an hour before the tragic accident.

At the time, Houge had driven his vehicle into a ditch. However, the police officers and a tow truck company helped Houge retrieve his vehicle and then drive away. The officers didn’t conduct a sobriety test. After the accident an hour later that resulted in Houge’s death, his blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was found to be 0.24% and traces of THC were also found in his blood.

The plaintiff in the wrongful death lawsuit has cited the gross negligence of the police officers and the tow truck driver as directly responsible for the accident and Jacobson’s death. The original lawsuit sought $30 million in damages. Last week, a Trial Court Judge dismissed the motions of the defendants to end the case and instead increased the proposed amount of settlement to $50 million.
