At least two deaths were confirmed by the Nevada Highway Patrol over the weekend after a vehicle allegedly driven by a drunk motorist crashed on Interstate 80 in the Wells area of Nevada. The fatal wreck was recorded on Sunday, April 19, according to accident reports supplied by the NHP.
The NHP confirmed that patrol officers were dispatched to the site of the crash on I-80, about two miles east of Wells following reports of a solo vehicle crash.
Preliminary investigations determined that the fatal victims were traveling in an orange Toyota pickup truck, through the east traffic lanes on I-80. Upon approaching the mile marker 354 in Elko County, the vehicle swayed to the side of the road, causing the driver to effect an overcorrection.
The sudden move, however, caused the truck to overturn, expelling its two occupants in the process. Authorities identified the fatal victims as Joshua Cook, 32, and Christopher Marriot, 34, both from West Wendover.
Police added that neither Joshua Cook nor Christopher Marriot were wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, which went against Nevada’s traffic safety regulations that make it mandatory for all front-seat occupants to wear a seat belt while in transit.
Medics accompanying the NHP pronounced the two men dead at the scene, the accident reports confirmed.
Deputies believe impairment was a factor in the crash. Investigations into the fatal collision that claimed the lives of Marriot and Cook are still in the works.
