A woman accused of killing one person and injuring dozens more when she drove onto a sidewalk in Las Vegas more than three years ago has been found not competent to stand trial.
Lakeisha N. Holloway, 29, formerly of Portland, Ore., is accused of murder and more than 70 additional felony charges for deliberately driving her vehicle onto a busy Las Vegas sidewalk in December 2015, according to authorities. More than 30 people were injured and Jessica Valenzuela, 32, of Buckeye, Ariz., died from injuries sustained in the incident.
She is being represented in criminal proceedings by a court-appointed car injury lawyer.
The crash occurred Dec. 20, 2015, near the Planet Hollywood casino-hotel. Police said Holloway was under the influence of marijuana – and was transporting a 3-year-old child – when she drove onto the busy boardwalk.
Holloway was arrested shortly after the incident in which Valenzuela was killed. Thus began a multi-year saga in which she received extensive mental health care as authorities worked to ensure she was mentally competent to withstand the rigors of trial.
Her case finally was set to go to trial last week. However, according to court documents filed in mid-March show that she has again been deemed not competent to stand trial.
Court proceedings have been postponed for an indefinite period of time. Her car injury lawyer has stated that it would be unfair a constitutional offense to force Holloway to endure a trial when she has been deemed not mentally fit.
