A police officer was injured in a crash around 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning in Henderson.

According to the authorities, two accidents were reported in the area of Sunset Road and Green Valley Parkway.

The unnamed officer was in his patrol car writing up an accident report for a traffic collision when he was struck by a 2018 Hyundai. The patrol car’s emergency lights were activated.

However, the driver of the Hyundai drove around a vehicle which had been involved in the previous crash.

The officer was ejected from his car.

Police said the driver of the Hyundai, Joseph Allen Smith, seemed to be impaired. The 27-year-old was arrested for driving under the influence and failing to obey traffic control devices.

Meanwhile, the officer was taken to a hospital and he was said to be in stable condition.

Joseph Allen Smith was booked into the Henderson Detention Center pending his first court appearance. He is expected to have an attorney to represent him.

Police said the intersection was closed for over three hours as police investigated the second crash.

Anyone with information on the crash has been asked to call HPD at 702-267-4750 or Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555.

In Nevada, it is illegal for motorists to operate a motor vehicle if their blood alcohol concentration is .08 percent or more within two hours of driving.

It is also illegal to drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs regardless of BAC. Under the influence means being impaired to the extent that an individual cannot drive safely.
