On Monday, Kathryn Murphy, 75, of Las Vegas, NV died in a car crash. The other driver was not found to be at fault. The Reverend was on her way to meet another chaplain, Rachel Dilling, for a work meeting. She was hit by an oncoming car as she pulled out into the road on Rainbow Boulevard.
Police have shut down Rainbow between the Desert Inn and Sahara in both directions. The investigation went on for many hours.
Police do not believe Kathryn was impaired in any way. At her age, she was in good health and overall condition. They are currently classifying the death as an accident.
A 26-year-old woman drove the vehicle that struck Murphy. The driver was only minimally harmed.
It is believed Murphy, who was driving a blue Toyota Prius, was trying to cross Rainbow going to the east on Eldora. Police say she couldn’t make it across the entire intersection and stopped her vehicle while crossing Rainbow in the southbound lanes. She is believed to have been looking towards northbound traffic while stopping for oncoming northbound traffic.
The other woman, who was driving a silver Nissan Sentra southbound down Rainbow, collided into the Prius stopped in the southbound lanes. Murphy was taken to a nearby hospital, but she didn’t make it. She succumbed to her injuries.
The woman, who had suffered only minor injuries, was found to be not at fault. She remained on scene as required to by law. In Nevada, fleeing a traffic accident scene is punishable by a fine.
