A 21-year-old French woman was struck and killed by an out-of-control vehicle at an intersection in downtown Las Vegas on Saturday. This was revealed by the authorities on Monday.
The woman was identified as Lisa Alyssa Mokhtari, a resident of Paris. She was struck while crossing Grand Central Parkway at Charleston Boulevard in the area of the Premium Outlet Mall.
Clark County Coroner John Fudenberg said she suffered multiple injuries which led to her death. Medical examiners said her death was an accident.
The driver of the vehicle was 30-year-old Zerihun Lakew of Las Vegas.
He suffered minor injuries.
He failed to stop his 2018 Toyota Prius at a red light and hit a 2012 Chevrolet pickup truck that was heading west on Charleston. The Prius then spun around and struck Mokhtari who was walking on a marked crosswalk.
Lisa Mokhtari was declared dead at University Medical Center. The driver of the pickup, a unnamed 36-year-old, was not injured.
Police said Lakew did not show any signs of impairment and he wasn’t arrested. The crash is still under investigation.
Nevada ranks fifth for the number of pedestrian accidents in the country, according to data collected by the Fatality Analysis Reporting System.
In addition, a December 2019 report from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Medicine, said Las Vegas is one of the most dangerous metro areas for people on foot. It ranked at number 21. Statistics show that 42.52 million visitors traveled to Las Vegas in 2019.
