Las Vegas police are continuing investigations into a multi-vehicle accident that occurred in the east valley on Monday. According to accident reports, the crash left one driver dead.
It occurred at 3:40 pm. on Sahara Avenue.
An unnamed 69-year-old driver sideswiped cars in adjacent lanes with his 1993 Toyota Camry.
He then crashed into other vehicles that had stopped at a red light.
Ten vehicles were involved. Police said the driver who caused the smash-up was the only person in his vehicle and he died at the scene.
Meanwhile, the driver of a car that overturned was taken to Sunrise Hospital with minor injuries. A 19-year-old male in one of the vehicles received serious injuries.
One vehicle caught on fire while others suffered damage that ranged from minor to extreme.
Lt. Bret Ficklin, who is with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, said the driver who was responsible may have been experiencing a medical episode.
Seizures, strokes, heart attacks and even low blood sugar can cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles. Sometimes, affected motorists crash into a pole or wall but other times, they
collide with other vehicles.
Ficklin said given the way the crash occurred, it was fortunate that there were no more injuries.
The Clark County Coroner’s Office will reveal the identity of the deceased and their cause of death after they notify their next of kin. When this information is released, another accident report will be published.
This was the 29th traffic fatality the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department investigated for the year so far.
