Pedestrian-Vehicle Crash Causes Death of Gabriel J. Mesa

A pedestrian was killed on Saturday after he was hit by a vehicle in the western Las Vegas Valley.

He was identified on Monday as 43-year-old Gabriel J. Mesa, according to the Clark County coroner’s office.

Las Vegas police said they responded to a report that two pedestrians were struck at 10:25 p.m. at 3825 South Durango Drive, south of West Spring Mountain Road.

Officers said Mesa and a woman were crossing Durango when they walked into the path of a Dodge Ram pickup. They were not using a marked crosswalk.

Mesa was struck and tossed into a desert area. He was declared dead at the scene. The coroner’s office said his death was accidental and he died of blunt force trauma.

Meanwhile, the unnamed 37-year-old woman was struck by the pickup’s left-side mirror and knocked into the roadway. Her injuries were said to be moderate and she was taken to University Medical Center for treatment.

The police media release said the 60-year-old driver of the pickup did not seem to be impaired. The individual stayed at the scene and cooperated with police. It is not yet known if the driver will be cited or arrested.

Gabriel J. Mesa’s death was the 21st traffic fatality recorded in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s jurisdiction this year.

Between 2008 and 2017, 601 people were struck and killed while walking on the streets of Nevada. Most of the accidents happened in Clark County.

In 2018, 63 pedestrians in Clark County lost their lives compared to 78 in 2017.
