Sean Murray Suing Hospital for Negligence After Death of Mother and Son

A man is suing Spring Mountain Treatment Center after his six-year-old son and the boy’s mother died in a house fire last October.

Forty-seven-year-old Renai Palmer died by suicide in a house fire and killed her son, Gavin Palmer in the process.

Gavin’s father Sean James Murray has filed a lawsuit claiming that the mental hospital which treated Renai a week earlier was negligent.

The Clark County Coroner’s Office ruled the incident a murder-suicide in December.

Before the ruling, Murray said he was told that gas was deliberately spread in the room and on Gavin, but he didn’t think Renai was capable of that.

He said Renai was admitted on a Legal 2000 and the hospital was negligent for discharging her. A Legal 2000 hold is placed on individuals who are considered to be in clear and present danger of harming themselves or others.

The lawsuit also charges that Spring Mountain failed to ensure the boy was safe from foreseeable harm. Murray is claiming that Renai was a dangerous, violent individual who didn’t have the mental capacity to take responsibility for her actions.

The lawsuit says the hospital had a duty to its patients and the community to hire, train and supervise competent personnel.

Murray is asking for more than $45,000 in damages.

Meanwhile, Spring Mountain Treatment Center is claiming that it didn’t admit anyone by the name of Renai Palmer in 2019.

Murray’s attorney said the allegations were based on available information, but the law firm would continue to investigate.

Murray and Palmer were not married but they had a legal joint custody agreement.
