A young woman has died, and her two sons are in hospital after the car flipped off the Crosstown Expressway overpass on Monday night. The vehicle came to rest on the frontage road below.

Police say the accident that claimed the life of 20-year-old Brianna Cruz took place near the Horne Road exit about 11:15 p.m. Witnesses said Cruz’s vehicle went off the expressway and landed on its roof. It reportedly narrowly missed a car that had stopped at the red light on Horne.

Christal Garza, who was in the car that stopped, said she heard a boom and when she looked, she saw the car fly off the freeway.

Police said the two young children were in the back seat and both were in car seats. An unnamed man, said to be in his 20’s, was also in the car.

People who witnessed the accident or drove past the wreck tried to get the boys out of the vehicle while they waited for emergency personnel to arrive. However, firefighters had to remove one boy.

Brianna Cruz died at the scene while the children were taken to Driscoll Children’s Hospital with serious injuries.

Police reported that the man was also rushed to a hospital in the area. No information was forthcoming about his condition or his connection to the family.

However, Cruz’s family said everyone was expected to be okay. They were surrounded by family and friends as they mourned their loved one’s passing on Tuesday.

Police are still investigating why that vehicle hit the guardrail and flew off the highway.
