A man was pronounced dead last week after being recovered from an overturned boat in Port Neches, Texas. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office identified the deceased man as Atif Kahn, a 29-year-old resident of Baytown, according to accident reports released on Monday, April 27.
The boating accident took place at about 7:38 am on Friday, April 24. As reported, Kahn was one of three employees from Carlsen’s Mooring Service sailing offshore in a 41-foot supply boat.
The boaters were reportedly taking cleaning supplies to a larger vessel stationed offshore. While outbound, another boat went by, creating a turbulent wake in its path. Investigators determined that the boat encountered the wake of the passing vessel, which caused the starboard side to fill up with water.
As a result, the cargo’s weight shifted to the water-filled side, causing the boat to overturn due to the imbalance. The three men remained in the waterlogged boat until crews from a tug boat rescued them and took them ashore.
At the time of the rescue, Atif Kahn was unconscious. The crew rushed him to the Port Neches Riverfront Park boat ramp for medical aid. He was later transported to an area hospital by Acadian EMS, where he was pronounced dead upon their arrival, police confirmed in the accident reports.
The identities and conditions of the other men involved in the boat accident were not disclosed. The incident remains under investigation by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
