One person was killed and a state trooper narrowly avoided injury Tuesday when a suspected intoxicated driver crashed into a vehicle stopped on the side of a highway in Big Spring, according to authorities.
John Lyons, 66, of Big Spring, was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital shortly after the wreck, which occurred just after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. No other injuries were reported as a result of the crash.
Investigators said Lyons’ vehicle and a Texas Department of Public Safety squad vehicle were pulled over on FM 700 at about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Lyons had left his vehicle to speak with the trooper, whom authorities did not identify in a press release.
While Lyons and the trooper were speaking, a vehicle driven by Lindsay S. Woods, 34, of Big Spring, crashed into the back of Lyons’ vehicle and then Lyons, authorities said. The trooper reportedly was able to get into his vehicle, allowing him to escape injury.
Emergency responders transported Lyons to an area hospital, where he ultimately died, troopers said.
Woods then was arrested on suspicion of intoxication manslaughter. According to Howard County Jail records, Woods posted a $20,000 surety bond and was released Wednesday.
