Authorities: Juan Esparza Fatally Struck By Vehicle In Ozona

Authorities have identified the pedestrian who died Tuesday morning after being struck by a pickup truck in Ozona.

Juan F. Esparza, 69, of Ozona, was pronounced dead at an area hospital after the wreck, which occurred at about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to a release from the Texas Department of Public Safety. No other injuries were reported in connection to the incident.

Troopers said Esparza was attempting to cross at the intersection of Avenues K and J when he was struck by a truck heading eastbound on Avenue K. The driver, 43-year-old David Leija, of Ozona, reportedly told investigators he did not see Esparza due to “environmental obstructions from the sun.”

Esparza was transported to the Ozona Family Health Center where he was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the wreck, according to a release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The release did not list any charges or citations that have been issued as a result of the incident. Authorities did not say why Esparza was attempting to cross the street or what factors, such as speed, might have contributed to the wreck.

The Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the incident.
