A Nederland man was struck and killed on Saturday night in Port Neches.
Police said 42-year-old Brandon Ray Cannon was struck by a motor vehicle after 10 p.m.
He was reportedly walking in the outside lane of Magnolia Avenue (Farm-to-Market 366) when he was hit by a Hyundai Tucson SUV.
Police said the victim was wearing dark clothes and that the area was not well lit. He suffered fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene.
The driver stayed at the accident scene to talk to officers and up to the time of media reports, he was not facing charges.
Advanced crash investigators processed the scene and officers from the Port Neches Police Department said they found evidence that Brandon Ray Cannon may have been walking several feet in the roadway.
The accident remains under investigation.
Pedestrian fatalities in Texas have increased dramatically over the last ten years. In 2010, there were 5, 789 pedestrian accidents and 273 pedestrian deaths.
However, in 2018, the state recorded 7, 903 pedestrian-vehicle accidents and 643 deaths. This is according to statistics published by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Crash Records Information System.
About a quarter of all pedestrian accidents involving a commercial vehicle result in a fatality.
The increase in accidents and deaths has been attributed to an increase in the size and weight of vehicles as well as an upsurge in cellphone use and other distractions.
In some cases, pedestrians contribute to their injuries. The figures show that 2,047 pedestrian accidents involving walkers who failed to yield.
