An East Texas man died in a single-vehicle crash early on Sunday morning after striking a tree.
Preliminary reports indicate that 34-year-old Charles Peckham was driving a pickup truck along Mink Road in Upshur County when he skidded off the road. He was said to be driving at a dangerous speed.
He overcorrected back to the right and then veered off the highway, crashing into the tree.
The accident occurred about seven miles to the south of Pittsburg. According to reports, Peckham was not wearing a seatbelt.
Texas Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Sgt. Jean Dark said troopers responded to the crash around 1:30 a.m.
Peckham was declared dead at the scene by Judge Rhonda Welch.
Information from the authorities has been limited. It is not known what caused Peckham to veer off the road. There were no reports of other injuries.
Investigations into the crash are ongoing.
According to an obituary posted online, Charles Peckham, was a resident of Sulphur Springs and he was better known as Charlie.
He was a skilled pipeline welder who was also capable of doing leather work and he had been known to make a few knives for himself.
The tribute said Peckham loved the outdoors, enjoyed fishing and hunting, and knew his way around a kitchen and a grill.
It noted that he loved his kids C.J., Eli, Kendra, and Waylon as well as his dogs Pisiden and Skid who he also considered family.
Peckham worshipped at the Cross Spur Cowboy Church in Sulphur Springs.
