Authorities said a driver was distracted by his phone when he crashed head-on into another vehicle Sunday morning, causing the death of the other motorist.
Alexis Ortiz, 20, was pronounced dead at a hospital after the wreck, which was reported at about 6:20 a.m. Sunday on Peavy Road in Far East Dallas, according to authorities. The other driver, Justin Williams, 38, reported possible injuries and was treated at the scene, police said.
Williams reportedly was driving a utility truck north on Peavy Road when he looked at his phone to check directions. He drifted into the oncoming lane, crashing head-on into an SUV operated by Ortiz near Province Lane.
Ortiz was transported to an area hospital for treatment, but later was pronounced dead as a result of the crash, according to authorities.
Investigators determined Williams had two active warrants in connection to unrelated drug charges, and he was arrested. Police later said Williams also will face a manslaughter charge as a result of the Sunday morning crash.
Online court records don’t yet list the manslaughter charge. Williams remains held on a $10,000 bond connected to a charge of possession of a controlled substance.
Authorities did not say Monday whether additional factors might have contributed to the wreck.
