The Houston Police Department is investigating an accident that resulted in the death of a motorcyclist.
The victim is 47-year-old David Salazar Monroy, accident reports state.
He was the only person involved in the crash on the U.S. Highway 290 access road on Saturday afternoon.
The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences confirmed his identity.
Police said Monroy was heading west on the Northwest Freeway service road in the area of Pinemont Drive when he failed to control his Honda VTX 1300 motorcycle.
He was thrown from the vehicle.
Monroy was taken to the Ben Taub General Hospital following the accident and he succumbed to his injuries there on Monday, police said.
No information was released regarding what caused him to lose control of his bike.
However, HPD said preliminary investigations revealed that Monroy was not wearing a helmet.
While helmets are not mandatory for all motorcycle operators in Texas, they are recommended. However, the law requires that motorcycle riders under the age of 21 must wear a helmet.
Those over 21 are not similarly mandated if they complete a training and safety course or they have the necessary insurance coverage.
Motorcyclists already have little to protect them when they get involved in a traffic accident even when they wear helmets. They don’t have seatbelts, airbags or the protection of a car.
Their injuries are often serious as was the case with Monroy, they can be fatal.
If details are released about what caused Monroy’s accident, there will be an update in future accident reports.
