Dawon Jermaine Davis Fatally Struck While Crossing Interstate

Jose Garcia-Trujillo

A pedestrian was hit by a car and killed as he crossed I-35 near Palmer Lane in Northeast Austin early on Friday morning.

According to accident reports from the Austin Police Department, the deceased is 35-year-old Dawon Jermaine Davis.

Police said a silver Mercury Grand Marquis was going southbound in the middle lane of the highway when Davis tried to cross from the center median to the west side.

The vehicle struck him just after 2:30 a.m. and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:05 a.m.

The driver whose name has not been released reportedly drove into a gas station that was close by and waited for the cops.

On Monday, police said the individual was cooperating with the investigation.

It is not believed that speeding, impairment or road or weather conditions contributed to the accident.

However, officers did not indicate what they suspected to be the cause.

Investigations are ongoing and more information could be released in subsequent accident reports.

Anyone who has information concerning the collision is asked to call detectives at 512-974-4278 or submit tips via Austin police’s mobile app, Austin PD.

Davis was the 35th individual to die on Austin’s roads for the year so far. Up to this time in 2019, police had investigated 30 traffic fatalities.

If these deaths were due to negligence on the part of a driver or third party, survivors can file a wrongful death claim. This would allow them to seek compensation for a wide range of economic and non-economic damages.
