Accident reports out of Harris County say deputies are investigating a hit-and-run accident that caused the death of a bicyclist.
Eddie Harrison was struck by a car around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
He was seen lying on the outer shoulder ramp of FM 1960.
Deputies said the vehicle involved was blue and it was going west in the outside lane.
The cyclist fell off his bike when the unknown vehicle struck him, and he died at the scene. It was not stated whether or not he was wearing a helmet.
However, Texas doesn’t have helmet laws. People of any age can ride a bicycle without wearing a helmet unless a municipal rule says otherwise.
Nonetheless, the driver didn’t stop as is required under Texas’ law. Deputies will continue to investigate the crash.
Leaving the scene of an accident is either a misdemeanor or a felony. The charge depends on the extent of the damage or injuries that result from the crash.
If an accident causes death or serious injury, as happened in Tuesday’s collision, the driver will be charged with a felony when caught. They will face two to ten years in prison.
Meanwhile, if a driver leaves the scene of an accident that results in non-serious injuries, it’s a felony that’s punishable by up to one year in prison.
On average, almost 800 bicyclists die annually across the United States in accidents involving motor vehicles.
Subsequent accident reports may reveal more about the crash that claimed the life of Eddie Harrison.
