A 51-year-old woman was killed in a two-vehicle accident after a driver ran a red light on Saturday morning.

She is Elvira Soreque-Bautista. The crash occurred around 9:50 a.m. in Grapevine.

The Dodge sedan in which Soreque-Bautista was a passenger was heading west on Hall-Johnson Road through the intersection with William D. Tate Avenue when the driver of a Mercedes ran the stoplight and crashed into it.

The vehicle in which Elvira Soreque-Bautista was traveling overturned and landed on William D. Tate’s north-facing road.

She was taken to a nearby hospital, but she died shortly after arrival.

Police said they spoke to the driver of the Mercedes, but they had not filed any charges as of Saturday night.

Investigators will continue to review the evidence.

Police said the crash caused the closure of the northbound service road of William D. Tate for about five hours.

Drivers are legally required to bring their vehicles to a halt at all stoplights. However, they don’t always do so, and this can result in accidents.

Data from the Federal Highway Administration show that about 40 percent of car crashes occur at intersections and they are often related to a driver running a stop sign or a stoplight.

Drivers ignore traffic signals for a variety of reasons including reckless driving, impatience, and distracted driving.

Meanwhile, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says crashes also tend to occur at intersections because these are the spots where multiple roads cross each other and there’s potential for conflict when drivers turn left, cross over, or turn right.
