Gabriela Shay Estrada was arraigned by a McLennan County Grand Jury on Wednesday.
The 22-year-old is accused of striking a woman with her car on December 15 and leaving her lying on the roadway with serious injuries.
Estrada was charged with intoxication assault, aggravated assault, and failure to stop render aid.
The accident happened at South 12th Street and LaSalle.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found 21-year-old Grace Oheeron unconscious and bleeding from the head.
An eyewitness reported that a vehicle ran a red light and struck the victim as she attempted to cross Lasalle.
The driver fled the scene without waiting for the ambulance or police to arrive.
Oheeron was taken to hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit. She suffered multiple serious injuries including head trauma and broken bones.
Meanwhile, police found evidence at the crash scene that led them to arrest Estrada at the University Apartments at 2900 Primrose.
Estrada was taken to the hospital where her blood was tested, and she was given medical clearance.
She was later charged and booked into McLennan County Jail.
Intoxication assault is usually a third-degree felony.
It refers to when a driver causes an accident that results in serious bodily injury to another individual. The injury can be caused by intent, mistake or accident. Intoxication assault can result in a prison sentence of between two and ten years and/or a fine of up to $10,000.
Meanwhile, aggravated assault refers to recklessly, intentionally, or knowingly causing serious bodily injury or using or exhibiting a deadly weapon while committing an assault. Aggravated assault is usually a second-degree felony. The punishment is the same as for intoxication assault.
