A ten-year-old girl who was riding her bike to school died after being hit by a car in west Bexar County on Thursday.
Officials say Irie Suarez lost control of the bike and went into oncoming traffic.
The accident occurred around 8 o’clock near Remrock Valley and Ranch View East.
Officials believe the weight of Suarez’s backpack may have caused her to swerve. However, the girl’s family said she was moving out of the way of a woman with a stroller
Suarez was not wearing a helmet.
The authorities said the nurse at nearby Kallison Elementary School, which Suarez attended, rushed to the scene and tried to save her life. Suarez was transported to University Hospital in critical condition and she later died.
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said the driver involved would not be facing charges at this time.
Meanwhile, Suarez’s family said she was very artistic, and she liked to play the guitar and watch anime.
Northside ISD officials said Irie Suarez was a 5th-grade student and she had only been attending Kallison Elementary for a couple of weeks.
They said grief counselors would be sent to the school to help support the children.
Residents of Valley Ranch are calling for changes to be made following the tragic accident.
They have launched an online petition asking for the county to install guardrails since drivers often speed down the road. Some are also calling for additional speed bumps and better lighting.
The sheriff’s office is looking for two potential witnesses who may have been walking by at the time of the crash.
