Police have arrested a 52-year-old Beaumont man after investigators say he hit a cyclist on Sunday and kept driving.
Traffic accidents continue to occur although a stay-at-home order is in place for Jefferson County. Texas auto accident attorneys are likely to remain busy.
Regarding Sunday’s incident, Beaumont Police responded to the 5300 block of Delaware just after 9 a.m. and found the unnamed victim unresponsive.
Eyewitnesses told police they saw a vehicle hit the individual before continuing to drive.
Officers found the suspect’s car near Eastex Freeway on Delaware. Police say the motorist was identified as Jason Lynn McKnight.
McKnight was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving personal injury or death.
Under Texas law, every individual is mandated to stop their vehicle after a crash that involves personal injury, death or property damage. Failure to do so can result in a criminal charge.
Punishment can include fines, jail or prison time and a driver’s license suspension.
McKnight was taken to the Jefferson County Jail.
The injured bicyclist was taken to a Houston hospital and the person’s injuries were said to be critical.
Bicyclists are particularly vulnerable and bicycle accidents often lead to serious injuries, high medical bills, and other losses.
Victims often turn to auto accident attorneys for advice and representation. They may be able to claim compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, lost earning capacity and other damages.
