Authorities said a Coryell County teen died Monday in a single-vehicle wreck about 11 miles outside Gatesville.

Jeffrey D. Ward, 18, died at the scene of the wreck, which occurred at about noon Monday, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. No other vehicles were involved in the wreck, and no other injuries were listed on car accident reports available Wednesday.

Troopers said Ward was driving his pickup truck west on U.S. 84 at about noon Monday when he lost control of his vehicle. The truck went off the roadway’s right shoulder, prompting Ward to overcorrect, according to car accident reports.

The vehicle then began to skid, left the roadway and struck a fence, causing it to overturn, authorities said. Ward was killed upon impact, car accident reports state.

Troopers said Ward was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. He was the only occupant of the vehicle, car accident reports state.

The incident is under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety. Authorities have not said whether they suspect factors like intoxication, speed or inattentive driving might have contributed to the wreck.

Ward was set to graduate from high school later this year. A post on the Evant Independent School District Facebook page expressed condolences for Ward’s friends and family.

“It is with a heavy heart that we ask for prayers for the Class of 2020 as they lost a classmate and friend (Monday) in an accident,” school district officials wrote in the post.
