A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run crash on U.S. 67 in Texas on Saturday morning. His family could have grounds to contact a wrongful death attorney.
The Texas Department of Public Safety identified the v as 36-year-old Jesus G. Lopez of Las Cruces, New Mexico.
He was walking along a section of the road that’s around two miles southwest of San Angelo.
DPS said Lopez was heading northeast on the southwest-bound side of roadway when the driver mowed him down and then fled the scene.
As of Tuesday, there were no updated reports indicating the driver had been found.
The Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office said the vehicle was possibly a white or light-colored SUV or pickup with a grille guard. It is believed that it suffered damage to its front end.
After striking Lopez, the vehicle kept traveling south in the direction of Mertzon.
Annette Martinez, the mother of the victim’s son, said Lopez left Las Cruces over the weekend to gamble in Texas.
She said he was traveling with friends and they got into an argument at some point. Martinez said Lopez got out of the vehicle and started to walk alone.
She said the family was heartbroken after learning about the fatal accident. She added that Lopez was an only child and his mother was devastated.
Martinez said the family wanted answers and she appealed to the driver to “do the right thing” and surrender to police.
She did not say whether the family would look into hiring a wrongful death attorney.
