One man was killed in a single-vehicle wreck Friday night in Cherokee County, according to authorities.

Joe R. White, 57, of Jacksonville, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred Friday night on FM 856 a few miles outside New Summerfield, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Car accident reports do not list any additional vehicle involved in the wreck, and no other injuries were reported.

Troopers said White was driving on FM 856 at about 10:30 p.m. Friday when he approached a curve about five miles southwest of New Summerfield. White failed to navigate the curve, lost control of his vehicle and went off the roadway, according to car accident reports.

The vehicle slid sideways and struck a tree on the driver’s side, according to authorities. The vehicle then went back onto the roadway, where it came to rest, car accident reports.

Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene. However, a local judge ultimately pronounced White dead before he could be transported to an area hospital for treatment, according to car accident reports.

The incident remains under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety. Investigators have not said whether they expect factors like speed, intoxication or inattentive driving might have contributed to the wreck.

It wasn’t clear Sunday night whether additional car accident reports are forthcoming.
