A Georgia man has died almost two weeks after being involved in an accident in Southeast Odessa.
On the morning of February 14, Odessa Fire Rescue and Odessa Police responded to the 7100 block of East I-20 following reports of a major crash involving an 18-wheeler.
Police say the investigation revealed that 32-year-old Joseph Imhoff was driving behind the truck when he failed to control his speed and collided with the vehicle.
Imhoff was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries and police say alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.
Joseph Imhoff was pronounced dead by medical personnel on February 27.
No one else suffered injuries in the crash.
Reports indicate that the 18-wheeler was driven by 41-year-old Kiley Boutte. Boutte was heading eastbound on East IH-20 when the accident occurred. Imhoff was operating a Ford F-250.
Investigations are continuing into the collision.
Drinking and driving is extremely dangerous. Alcohol impairs driving skills by slowing reaction times, reducing coordination and concentration, and decreasing vision. It also inhibits judgment. Even a blood alcohol concentration of 0.02 percent can reduce a driver’s judgment.
Truck accidents can also result in serious consequences. They are more likely to be deadly than accidents involving regular passenger vehicles. That’s because 18-wheelers often carry big-rigs that weigh up to 25 times more than a passenger car.
Because of the significant difference in weight, the smaller vehicle often sustains extensive damage and the occupants suffer serious, often fatal, injuries.
