A man who had been released on bond while awaiting trial on vehicular homicide charges was arrested Monday on unrelated human smuggling charges after leading authorities on a high-speed chase near Laredo, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Rigoberto M. Arevalo, 21, was arrested Monday evening after a pursuit that began on I-35 ende din Laredo, the state agency reported. He faces charges of human smuggling, reckless driving and two counts of evading arrest.
Troopers began pursuing Arevalo’s vehicle at about 8 p.m. Monday, continuing the chase to West Village Boulevard near Springfield Avenue. Arevalo was arrested, as was his passenger, Alexandra K. Villalobos, 25, on charges of endangering a child and engaging in criminal activity.
Authorities said four undocumented immigrants also were turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol.
The arrest came a months after Arevalo was charged with causing a crash that resulted in death.
Authorities said he was behind the wheel Dec. 12 when he crashed into a vehicle operated by Antonio E. Martinez, 77, before fleeing. Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck.
Arevalo was arrested the day after the crash, according to authorities. He was held behind bars until he was able to post bond in mid-January.
