Lona Thorne Killed In Single-Vehicle Wreck In Bell County

State of Texas authorities have identified the woman killed early Thursday morning in a single-vehicle rollover wreck in Bell County.

Lona G. Thorne, 58, of Belton, died at the scene of the wreck, which occurred just before 6 a.m. Thursday on FM 436 near Little River Academy, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. No other vehicles were involved in the crash and no other injuries were listed on car accident reports.

Troopers said Thorne was driving her pickup truck east on FM 436 at 5:52 a.m. Thursday near the school when she approached a curve. Thorne failed to turn in time, causing her pickup to leave the roadway and roll over, according to car accident reports.

Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene, but Thorne was pronounced dead by a local justice of the peace before she could be transported to an area hospital, authorities said.

No one else was in the vehicle at the time of the crash, authorities said. No additional injuries were reported.

The incident remains under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety. It is unclear from car accident reports available Friday whether investigators suspect the involvement of contributing factors like intoxication, speed or inattentive driving.

Thorne’s loved ones posted an obituary after she was killed.

“She spent many years as a home health aide,” they wrote in the obituary. “Her greatest joy was being a mom to her (son) and loving her friends and family.”
