Authorities have identified the teen killed late last month in all-terrain vehicle crash in Cherokee County.
Makayla L. Miller, 19, of Pomeroy, Wash., died March 29, according to new information released by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department. Car accident reports state another person, a 19-year-old man, also was injured in the wreck.
Authorities said Miller was in the area visiting friends on March 29 when she took a drive on an ATV. She was driving on a private property near Cherokee County 3220 at about 11 a.m. that day when she lost control of the vehicle and crashed.
Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene.
The man, whom authorities did not publicly identify, was the vehicle’s passenger, according to car accident reports. He was treated at an area hospital and later was released, authorities said.
Miller also was treated by emergency responders, but she later succumbed to wounds sustained in the crash, according to the sheriff’s department. An autopsy has been ordered and officials continue to investigate the incident.
According to Miller’s obituary, she was an avid rodeo aficionado who participated in barrel racing, pole bending and goat tying, “which was her favorite.”
“Makayla was very competitive from showing animals, playing sports, competing in rodeo and family game nights,” loved ones wrote in the obituary.
Miller also worked as a wildland firefighter with the U.S. Forest Service in Chelan, Wash.
“She pushed herself to make their manifest team and on her first fire in the Alaska fire of 2019,” the obituary said.
