A 68-year-old woman died following a two-vehicle accident in Sabine County on Thursday afternoon.
She is Nancy Little, a resident of Hemphill. Troopers say she drove into oncoming traffic just after 3 p.m. on State Highway 184. This is about a mile and a half to the west of Hemphill.
Sergeant David Hendrey of the Texas Department of Public Safety said Little was driving a Toyota pickup truck and going east in the westbound lane when she collided head-on with a Jeep Wrangler.
She was rushed to Hemphill’s Sabine County Hospital for treatment, but she was declared dead shortly after arrival.
Meanwhile, the driver of the Jeep, 38-year-old Misty Graffeo, was also taken to hospital with unspecified injuries.
No information has been released about why Nancy Little was going the wrong way. The crash remains under investigation.
Investigators will examine the vehicle as well as photos of the scene to help them determine what happened. Eyewitness accounts will also be taken into consideration.
Wrong-way crashes are often caused by an intoxicated driver but there are several reasons why they can occur including drowsy driving and confusion. The driver may also be avoiding debris or an animal in the road.
Head-on collisions are serious crashes and they are often fatal. They account for only two percent of collisions but cause ten percent of motor vehicle fatalities. Head-on collisions can lead to severe head injuries, spinal cord damage, severe bone fractures, organ damage, burn injuries and other types of issues.
