Police: Anthony Maldonado Injured In Single-Vehicle Wreck In Odessa

An Odessa teen is in critical condition after a police chase ended in a major crash early Wednesday morning in the southwest part of the city, according to police.

Anthony Maldonado, 18, was airlifted to a Lubbock hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries after the wreck, according to a press release from the Odessa Police Department. No other injuries were reported by authorities.

Police said an officer at about 1 a.m. Wednesday observed Maldonado’s vehicle heading west on West Eighth Street “at a high rate of speed.” The officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, but Maldonado allegedly sped off with the police officer in pursuit.

The officer “terminated the stop,” but shortly thereafter Maldonado’s vehicle crashed into a utility pole at the corner of Eighth Street and West Loop 339, according to the release.

“Maldonado was transported to a local hospital and later airlifted to a hospital in Lubbock with life-threatening injuries,” police said in the release.

A updated condition report wasn’t available late Wednesday.

Additional details about the crash weren’t immediately available. Police have not said whether other factors, such as intoxication, are believed to have contributed to the crash.

Odessa Police Department officials said the investigation is ongoing.
