A man was killed on Thursday after he was struck by a plane that was landing at an Austin, Texas airport.
The victim’s name has not yet been made public in accident reports from online news outlets.
Officials said the man was struck on runway 17R at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
The incident involved Southwest Airlines Flight 1392 which had taken off from Dallas’ Love Field.
The airport said the pilot had seen a person on the runway after touching down at 8:12 p.m. CT and maneuvered to try to avoid the individual.
However, AUS Airport Operations looked into the pilot’s report and found the victim on the runway. The person was pronounced dead at the scene.
The plane taxied to a gate and the 53 passengers and five crew members disembarked. Southwest said no one on board was injured.
The victim will likely be named in future accident reports.
Airport officials don’t believe the man was supposed to be on the runway and police say he wasn’t wearing any uniform that would suggest he was an airport worker.
The Austin Police Department (APD) is leading the investigation into the incident and the Federal Aviation Administration will assist.
A photo of the plane showed damage to the outside casing of the left engine.
The runway involved was closed following the fatal accident. However, flights continued to take off and land on another runway.
Maintenance personnel worked early on Friday to prepare the runway for reopening.
Commercial airplane accidents are rare.
