Pedestrian Struck Near Laredo Id’d As Jhonatan Ortiz

Authorities this week identified the teen killed crossing an interstate near Laredo early this month as a resident of Guatemala.

Jhonatan S. E. Ortiz, 19, was killed in the crash March 1 on U.S. 25, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. At the time of the incident, officials identified the victim only as an 18-year-old, but little information has been released in the time since.

Authorities said the driver of a white BMW was driving north on U.S. 35 near mile marker 29 at about 3:20 p.m. March 1 when a pedestrian entered the road. The driver struck the teen, identified Thursday as Ortiz, died from his injuries at the scene.

The Texas Department of Public Safety has not released the identity of the BMW driver, nor have the indicated whether the driver will be cited or charged with a crime.

The crash occurred near a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol checkpoint on U.S. 35. It’s unclear why Ortiz was in the area and why he attempted to cross the interstate, on which the speed limit is 75 mph.

Troopers are continuing to investigate the crash. No other injuries have been reported as a result of the incident.
