Police: Death of Kenneth Richardson Following Crash Under Investigation

Bob Swain

The Houston Police Department is investigating a car accident that left one man dead and injured a young boy. According to accident reports, the crash occurred on March 11.

The deceased has been identified as 55-year-old Kenneth Richardson.

Police say he was going west in the 5200 block of Tidwell Road in a Chevrolet Astrovan just before 6:30 p.m.

He left his lane and crashed into a fence on the north side of Tidwell. The vehicle rolled over and killed Richardson on the spot.

His passenger, an unnamed seven-year-old boy, was taken to Texas Children’s Hospital for medical attention, the police department said.

HPD spokesman Victor Senties said the boy’s relationship to Richardson had not yet been ascertained.

He also said that the cause of the crash remained under investigation. Officers are awaiting a toxicology report so they can find out whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the accident, Senties said.

On average, 29 people die in the United States every day in an accident that involves a driver impaired by alcohol. This means someone dies every 50 minutes. These crashes cost the country more than $44 billion each year.

Meanwhile, legal and illegal drugs other than alcohol are a factor in about 16 percent of traffic accidents.

Drugs and alcohol can have a significantly negative impact on a driver’s ability to stay in control of their vehicle. They can lead to problems with judgment, vision, coordination, concentration, speed control, and response time.

When more is known about last weekend’s crash, the police may reveal additional information in future accident reports.
