Rosalinda Olalde Found Guilty of Intoxication Manslaughter

A jury debated for seven hours on Wednesday before finding a 24-year-old woman guilty of intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault.

Rosalinda Olalde was charged in connection with an August 2018 crash that killed one person and injured four others.

She faces up to 20 years in prison. The sentencing phase of the trial was scheduled to begin on Thursday.

In his closing arguments, Olalde’s lawyer suggested that the man driving the other car caused the accident that claimed his life.

The victim, 22-year-old Mario Velasquez-Plau, was attempting to enter the Loop 1604 access road when he went over a sidewalk that was parallel to the access road.

A prosecution witness said Rosalinda Olalde veered from the access road and went onto the sidewalk, crashing into Valesquez-Plau’s sedan.

Defense attorney Demetrio Duarte said the collision would not have happened if Valesquez-Plau stayed behind the line.

However, prosecutor Kristina Escalona countered this claim. She said Olalde was alone on the road and she was speeding. She said her loss of control was what got her on the sidewalk.

Expert witnesses said Olalde was traveling at around 80 miles per hour and her blood alcohol concentration was 0.18 – over twice the 0.08 legal limit in Texas.

Earlier in the trial, Escalona said Olalde admitted to consuming three margaritas and two shots that night.

Trauma surgeon Dr. Christopher Crane testified that there were also prescribed anxiety medication in her system.

The case was heard in Judge Jennifer Pena’s 290th District Court.
