Officers with the San Antonio Police Department responded to a fatal accident at Interstate 10 and Loop 1604 early on Sunday morning.
Based on preliminary reports, 19-year-old Aldo Ray Flores Jr died after he was ejected from the backseat of a vehicle. He was not wearing a seatbelt.
He was traveling in a GMC Sierra that was heading west on Loop 1604.
The unnamed driver of the truck, also 19 years old, exited toward Interstate 10 westbound even though the front seat passenger suggested otherwise. This passenger was trying to give the driver directions using a GPS device.
Amid the confusion about which way to drive, the driver hit the sand barrels at the highway split. The Sierra went over the wall and fell 25 feet to the ground. It landed on the lower level of the highway and rolled multiple times before it came to a stop.
Flores was ejected through the back window during the crash. Emergency personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
The driver and the front-seat passenger were transported to University Hospital. The driver was said to have received critical injuries while the passenger was reported to be in stable condition.
Police say the driver was intoxicated at the time of the accident. When he is released from the hospital, he will be formally charged with intoxication manslaughter and possibly other offenses.
Intoxication manslaughter is a second-degree felony in Texas, and it carries a prison sentence of up to 20 years.
