Sandra Patricia Diaz Dead, Three Minors Injured in Single-Vehicle Incident

An accident that occurred on Thursday, February 20th, on the Farm-to-Market Road 1420 north of County Road 800 took the life of Sandra Patricia Diaz, 30, of San Benito. She was traveling in the company of her three children.

The accident occurred at 7:30 a.m. near Santa Monica in Willacy County. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a red 2002 Mercury Mountaineer driven by the deceased was heading south when it went off the roadway.

Diaz navigated a curve driving at the wrong speed and lost control of her car. It went into the air, flipped, hit a utility pole, and began to roll before resting on its roof.

The Mountaineer was the only vehicle involved in the wreck, and there was no other victim aside from the deceased and her children. All the occupants of the car were not wearing seatbelts when the accident occurred.

The driver suffered significant trauma and died at the scene before the first responders arrived. Two out of the children suffered minor injuries, and one — a male — had collapsed lungs and is in critical but stable condition at the Valley Baptist Hospital in Harlingen where they were taken.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is assisting the Willacy County Sheriff’s Office in its investigation into the crash. The authorities do not suspect impaired driving on the part of the driver.

They believe Diaz failed to calculate the appropriate speed needed to navigate the curve, which led to the accident. The investigation into the crash is still ongoing.
