An individual has been arrested in connection with the hit-and-run accident that left El Paso firefighter Armando Lopez nursing serious injuries.
However, the person’s name, gender or age have not yet been released.
Lopez was among the El Paso Fire Department crews at the scene of a crash along Trans Mountain Road East at Paseo Del Norte on February 12.
He was struck by another vehicle and the driver sped off from the scene without stopping. That accident happened around 7 a.m.
It is understood that a fire truck was blocking the right westbound lane, but the driver disregarded it and went around the truck and back into the lane, striking the firefighter.
The vehicle that hit Lopez was described as either an SUV or a truck. Police said the white vehicle had extensive damage to the windshield.
Armando Lopez was taken to University Medical Center in El Paso in critical condition. He was later said to be in stable condition and his health is reportedly improving.
El Paso police and the U.S. Marshals’ fugitive task force caught the alleged driver on Tuesday. However, no details about the charges have been released.
A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to assist Lopez and his family. By Thursday, it had so far raised $12,475 of a $15,000 goal.
An update posted to the page said Lopez will require a long period of recuperation but his family was grateful for the support they were receiving.
