The Eddy County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the death of a man found unresponsive in a railroad tank car in Carlswood, Texas. According to the accident reports obtained from the Sheriff’s office, backed by the Marathon Petroleum Corporation, they pronounced the victim dead on Tuesday morning, May 12.
Authorities said at precisely 9:05 a.m., they received reports of a man discovered unconscious, and not breathing at the Marathon Rio Hub Rail Terminal. The reports affirmed the man was at the time pinned inside a railroad tank car in the area of 70 Potash Mines Road and U.S. Highway 285.
Police did not immediately establish the events leading to his discovery, but the surrounding circumstances suggest it may have been a work-related accident. A Marathon Corporation spokesperson, Jamal T. Kheiry, told deputies the victim was on the site performing a routine inspection on the railroad tank car.
The deceased, identified as Cody Vernon, 49, of Marshall, was a contractor with Marathon. The accident reports revealed that a second contractor also inspecting the site discovered the unresponsive worker and notified authorities.
Medical personnel accompanying the responding officers pronounced Vernon dead at the scene. Investigators did not immediately determine his cause of death. The Eddy County Sheriff officials confirmed the fatal victim’s remains would undergo a post-mortem examination at the Medical Investigator’s office in Albuquerque.
The tragic occurrence is under investigation by the Occupational Health and Safety Bureau of the New Mexico Environment Department. The Eddy County Sheriff’s deputies are also investigating.
