A 57-year-old driver has died, and his two passengers have been admitted to hospital after a crash near Texline early on Tuesday morning. According to accident reports, the deceased is Kirk McAlister, a resident of Pueblo, Colorado.
The injured are 52-year-old Anne McAlister and 20-year-old Dezerai Maul who are both from the same area.
They were transported to Coon Memorial Hospital in Dalhart where they were listed in stable condition.
The Texas Department of Public Safety said Kirk McAlister was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee north on US 87 when the vehicle went over a patch of ice.
McAlister lost control of the Jeep and it slid past the bridge, spun sideways, and went across the center median. It then slid across the southbound lanes and hit a guardrail before rolling over onto its roof. McAlister passed away on the scene.
The crash occurred around 2:45 a.m.
Although the COVID-19 pandemic has cut traffic by around half in many cities, fatal crashes continue to occur throughout Texas, as accident reports show.
Police in Texas recorded at least 241 fatalities in March, a 21 percent reduction when compared to March 2019.
In a post on his Facebook page on April 11, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said his office was still responding to fatal crashes daily. He said many of the crashes occurred during non-essential trips and drivers were engaging in “undesirable behavior, including speeding”.
He stressed that the presence of fewer vehicles on the road didn’t mean the rules of the road had changed.
“It’s really disappointing because we need our medical facilities for sick people,” he said.
