One person was killed in a rollover motorcycle crash Friday afternoon in Rusk County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Samuel D. Jeffus, 54, of Henderson, was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck, which occurred at about 2 p.m. Friday about nine miles southwest of Tatum, troopers said. No other vehicles were involved in the incident and no other injuries were reported.
Troopers said Jeffus was riding his motorcycle south on FM 782 on Friday when he approached a curve in the road. Jeffus reportedly failed to adequately negotiate the turn and left the roadway, entering a ditch.
The motorcycle eventually flipped several times, ejecting Jeffus, according to the state agency. A judge pronounced Jeffus dead at the scene.
Troopers have not said whether factors such as speed are believed to have contributed to the wreck. The investigation is ongoing, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Jeffus’ body was transported to Crawford A. Crimm Funeral Home in Henderson. An obituary was posted over the weekend.
According to the obituary, Jeffus was a native of Aurora, Colo., and “served his country in the Desert Storm conflict with the U.S. Marine Corps special forces unit.” He also worked in law enforcement for a time.
