The Texas Department of Public Safety officials said that Tavin Benton, 21, of Fullerton, and Hayden Stout, 22, of Springfield, Illinois, died in the crash at about 11:55 am. Investigators gathered that both victims were passengers in a vehicle that was driving through I-40.
According to the DPS report, the car was traveling through the west lanes on Interstate 40, directly behind a semi-trailer. The vehicle’s driver failed to control his speed, causing the smaller vehicle to smash into the semi from behind.
The impact caused the three occupants of the speeding car to be ejected from the vehicle before it eventually halted and went ablaze. Stout and Benton sustained fatal injuries in the collision, and medics pronounced them dead upon their arrival.
The motorist suffered severe injuries, described as life-threatening, in the collision. An air ambulance transported the unidentified driver to University Medical Center in Lubbock to commence treatment.
Meanwhile, the operator of the semi-trailer emerged unscathed. Officers revealed that none of the commuters in the wrecked vehicle was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
DPS investigators are actively investigating the tragic accident.
